Why condensation forms

Condensation occurs when warm, humid air contacts a surface below the surrounding dew point. On chilled water and refrigeration pipework, this can lead to dripping, damaged insulation and corrosion beneath the cladding.

An effective system must limit heat transfer and prevent moisture from reaching the cold pipe surface.

Use the thickness specified for the pipe temperature and surrounding conditions.

Maintain a continuous vapour barrier around the insulation system.

Seal joints, penetrations and fittings to reduce moisture entry.

Areas that need attention

Most moisture problems begin at damaged or poorly sealed areas. Pay particular attention to seams, pipe supports, terminations, valves, flanges and locations where services pass through the cladding.

Outdoor installations should also be detailed to shed water and limit entry at overlaps and penetrations.

Can wet insulation be left in place?

Wet insulation may lose performance and contribute to corrosion. It should be inspected and replaced where necessary.
